Masjid Jamae Chulia
As
part of UU Singapore's regular fieldtrips, we have visited the Masjid
Jamae(Chulia) built as early as 1826.
The Masjid Jamae Chulia is a mosque and continue to
function today addressing the religious and social needs of the Muslim
community in Singapore.
The mosque became a national monument on 29
November 1974.
Situated in Chinatown, it becomes an interesting
example to showcase the multi racial and multi cultural Singapore right
in the heart of Singapore Chinatown.
The
Mosque committed has very kindly planed a series of program for the UU
visit.
A tour was conducted around the mosque to understand
the historical background of the mosque, its founding history as well as
introduction to the central ideas of Islam and the way in which it is
practiced. This was followed by a presentation and a Q&A session.
This visit allows us to lean about Islam, the history
of this mosque and the ways in which the Mosque and Muslim Singaporeans
contribute towards the success of multi racial and multi cultural
Singapore and how they continue to practice their faith today.
A big thank you to the Management of Masjid
Jamae(Chulia) for their hospitality and their sharing as well as for giving the
group an opportunity to learn.
